To me, fashion is a comfortable aesthetic state enabling the identification of an individual despite intersectionality. It transcends borders and goes beyond race and gender.

13 When She was Blinded
DOC 10/2021

GARMENTS:   1 /SIZE 6
FABRICS:  CHIFFON /PRINTED COTTON
An upcycling project that aims to serve as a visual representation of the struggles faced by women under oppressive dress codes. Through the transformation of my digital painting "When She Was Blinded" into a three-dimensional garment, I aim to raise awareness of the loss of female’s individuality and identity. By juxtaposing the concealed identities with vibrant patterns and emphasizing inner beauty, the garment advocates for women's rights, freedom, and the celebration of their true selves.

The painting depicts the female perspective within the Taliban's imposed dress code, symbolized by the long, fully veiled black abayas that cover their entire bodies, including their eyes and hands. Drawing inspiration from the resilience demonstrated by Afghan women who use social media campaigns to reclaim their culture and fight for their rights, I made the choice to arrange lighting straight onto the model’s face and eyes, portraying how the woman in the midst of an injustice rule is able to stay wide awake, echoing the name of the painting piece: how she was blinded by the oppressive environment but yet she remains resilient and not blind.
